Background Radiation
Radiation arising from radioactive material other than the one directly under consideration. Also see natural background radiation.

Becquerel (Bq)
International System of Units unit of radioactivity equal to the amount of radioactive material that yields one nuclear transformation (disintegration) per second. (1 Bq = 1 disintegration per second = 2.7 X 10-11 Curie).

Beta Particle (b)
A negatively charged particle whose mass and charge are the same as that of an electron. Beta particles are emitted from the nucleus of certain radioactive atoms.

Beta-2-microglobulin
An indicator of potential kidney damage.

Bioassay
Specific biological monitoring methods to assess biological specimens (such as urine) for changes resulting from exposure to materials foreign to the body
