To learn more, select a topic of interest: Background on DoD Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) In 2004, the Office of the Director, Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) evaluated the existing protections for human subjects and implemented changes within the Department. Most notably DDR&E created the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and delegated local oversight authority for protecting human subjects to DoD components. This authority is vested in each component's ability to accept and issue assurances of compliance from their constituent institutions. Components with this authority include the Departments of Army, Navy, Air Force, and Under Secretary of Defense (Personal & Readiness). For more information:
