OUSD(P&R) Human Research Protection Program (HRPP)

Researchers Section

Two key ideas permeate the laws, regulations, and policies that govern the conduct of human subjects research:

  1. Ethical guidelines must apply when humans are used as subjects in research:
    • Respect for Persons: Infomed consent of participants
    • Beneficence: Do no harm
    • Justice: Research benefits accrue to the same population as the research burdens
  2. Commensurability:
    • The level of risk to subjects must be commensurate with the potential benefit to subjects
    • The level of review and oversight should be commensurate with the level of risk to participants
