Two key ideas permeate the laws, regulations, and policies that govern the conduct of human subjects research:
- must apply when humans are used as subjects in research:
- Respect for Persons: Infomed consent of participants
- Beneficence: Do no harm
- Justice: Research benefits accrue to the same population as the research burdens
- Commensurability:
- The level of risk to subjects must be commensurate with the potential benefit to subjects
- The level of review and oversight should be commensurate with the level of risk to participants
